Acupuncture treatment benefits and risks
what is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has become very popular in recent years. People
say that it helps them relax, sleep better, and even improve their overall
health. Though acupuncture isn’t new at all, its popularity was only recently
picked up. What exactly is acupuncture?
A Chinese word
meaning needle, acupuncture was widely practiced in China long before the dawn
of modern medicine. The practice involves inserting fine needles into specific
points on the body, often along energy channels called meridians or qi lines.
Acupuncture is now popular worldwide, and many studies show that it can provide
relief from pain, nausea, fever, insomnia, and other conditions.
Types of Acupuncture
1. Acupuncture is a Chinese medicine treatment involving
inserting fine needles at selected points in the body. The aim of acupuncture
is to help balance the flow of qi (energy) throughout the human system. In
modern times, there have been many studies that show how effective acupuncture
is at treating pain relief and even some forms of depression.
2. TENS units (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)
These types of
devices use electricity to stimulate certain muscles in order to relieve muscle
spasms, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. TENS units are commonly
placed over painful areas and leave no marks on the skin. These units can be
used in conjunction with other treatments, such as massage therapy, physical
therapy, chiropractic care, and other medical procedures.
3. Reflexology
The theory behind
reflexology is rooted in ancient Eastern philosophies and focuses on
stimulating the acupressure points found on the feet, hands, ears (for
balance), and head (relaxation). Using the thumb, finger, heel, or elbow is
used to press these points in order to achieve specific results. Some of the
best places to apply pressure to affect these points include the soles of the
feet, palms of the hands, wrist area, earlobes, and temples.
4. Acupressure
This method involves
applying gentle pressure with fingers to specific points on various parts of
the body to increase circulation and improve blood and lymphatic flow.
Different hand positions can direct the effects of acupressure towards
different organs and systems. Massaging the stomach area stimulates the immune
system, while massaging the lungs increases respiratory function.
5. Acupuncture
As mentioned earlier,
acupuncture uses fine needles inserted into the body’s acupuncture points to
provide therapeutic benefits. Unlike traditional acupuncture,
electro-acupuncture allows the practitioner to insert thin metallic needles
that are connected to small machines containing high frequency alternating
current. A patient may feel tingling sensations during this type of treatment.
6. Qi Gong exercises
Qi gong is a practice
in Traditional Chinese Medicine that helps practitioners keep their bodies
balanced and focused. Qi gong incorporates breathing techniques, meditation,
and martial arts training. The goal is to gain mental clarity and improve
flexibility. This form of exercise has gained popularity in recent years due to
its relaxing and calming effects.
7. Tai Chi
Tai chi consists of
slow flowing movements performed in circular motions. The primary goal of this
movement is to strengthen the body and mind. Practitioners believe that it is a
good way to prevent illness and disease and promote longevity.
Acupuncture benefits and risks
1. Benefits
Acupuncture offers many benefits for both patients and practitioners alike. As mentioned above, the primary purpose of the therapy is to treat pain, which is often alleviated by this type of treatment. Studies suggest that acupuncture may help to reduce physical pain. It may also help to relieve anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Many insurance plans cover acupuncture as a legitimate treatment option, and many insurance companies even offer discounts for those who receive acupuncture treatments regularly.
2. Risks
Although acupuncture is generally considered to be safe, it does have some potential side effects. These side effects are very rare. Side effects may result from improper technique, lack of experience, infection from dirty needles, or incorrect diagnosis. Common side effects include nausea, dizziness, headache, and bleeding. If these symptoms persist longer than 24 hours after treatment, seek emergency care immediately.
