Heart health park advice
1. Keep your heart healthy by eating fruits and vegetables! Fruits and vegetables provide many vitamins and antioxidants that keep our body functioning well. If you eat right and exercise regularly, then you’ll have less chance of developing any major cardiovascular disease.
2. Exercising is good for your heart. Exercise releases oxygen into your bloodstream, which helps remove toxins out of your system. You may feel sluggish after exercising, but exercise will help you get rid of those toxins.
3. Reduce cholesterol levels! Many doctors recommend reducing cholesterol to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. One way to do it is to make sure you don't eat foods high in saturated fats (like red meat) and replace them with foods that aren't high in saturated fat (fruits and vegetables).
4. Get moving! We know that exercise is great for our bodies, but it's even healthier if we can incorporate movement into our daily routine. Walking around outside, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or parking further away from stores is just a few ways to incorporate some movement into our lives.
5. Eat fish once a week! Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which means they're a super food for your heart. Omega-3s lower triglycerides and bad cholesterol while raising good cholesterol. Make sure you choose salmon over tuna since salmon isn't loaded with mercury.
6. Cut back on salt! Sodium causes fluid retention in the body, so if you want to lose weight or keep it off, cut back on sodium. Try using fresh herbs instead of salt or use low-sodium soy sauce or bouillon cubes.
7. Drink water! Drinking enough water keeps us hydrated and reduces bloating and belly bloat. Water also cleanses our blood and lymphatic systems, helping flush toxins from our bodies.
8. Limit caffeine intake. Caffeine raises your blood pressure and increases heart rate, so drinking coffee during the day can actually increase your chances of suffering from cardiovascular disease. Instead, try decaf tea or herbal teas that include lemon or mint.
9. Don't smoke! Smoking cigarettes not only makes your lungs weak and decreases lung capacity, but it also contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive drug that affects your brain's dopamine receptors. Cigarettes can cause your heartbeat to race and trigger a sudden drop in blood pressure, which could lead to stroke or a heart attack.
10. Manage stress! Stress causes our hearts to beat faster and work harder, which puts extra strain on the heart. Even minor stresses can increase your chance of experiencing a heart problem later in life. Relaxing and getting adequate sleep at night reduce stress and allow your mind to rest.
11. Use sunscreen! Sun exposure can damage your skin cells and contribute to premature aging. Use sunscreen anytime you go outside, especially if you spend time at the beach. You should apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply it often if you plan on being outside longer than 35 minutes.
12. Protect yourself from cold and flu season! Flu viruses spread easily, so it's important to protect yourself from these contagious germs. Wash your hands frequently and cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.
13. Get enough sleep! Lack of sleep can make you tired throughout the day and put you at higher risk of having a heart attack. Aim for eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. Sleep aids like melatonin and valerian root can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
14. Stay active! Regular physical activity improves fitness levels, boosts immunity, lowers the risk of diabetes, arthritis, and depression, and improves mood. A good idea is to add in some type of aerobic activity two times per week. You can walk, ride the bike, run, dance, take a class, swim, or jump rope. Or, if you prefer biking, try riding a stationary bike or swimming laps.
